1. GIslands 2010: Why?
With limited space and quantity in ocean resources, increased pressure on the marine environment has led to competing conflicts among users, and more significantly conflicts between users and the environment. The need to manage human activities and conflicts in the ocean to minimize their impacts on the marine ecosystem, as well as the place-based characteristic of ecosystems, and spatial and temporal development of ocean resources demonstrate the need to analyze the system from a spatial and temporal perspective. Defined by UNESCO, Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is “a way of improving decision making and delivering an ecosystem-based approach to managing human activities in the marine environment”. Geotechnologies, with the ability to provide decision makers with spatial and temporal analyses on the coastal and marine environments, human activities and the overlapping uses of ocean spaces, are essential to the development of a comprehensive MSP. Geotechnologies are revolutionizing the management of marine resources. What used to be hidden or inaccessible via traditional methods are now made available through remote sensing, tracking technologies and global positioning systems. These technologies enable the mapping and documentation of ecosystem characteristics for each location such as marine habitats, types of species, living and mineral resources, sea bottom morphology, and environmental condition. The capability of superimposing and analyzing these new data for each location and among various locations ensures a greater alignment with the ecosystem-based approach, which is defined as the overarching principle by the European Commission.

The purpose of the summer school is to revisit the concepts and ideas of a previous workshop held almost 10 years ago, about Global Change and Protected Areas (september 1999 in L'Aquila), to assess progress that has been made in our scientific ability to generate detailed climate projections at the regional scale that are of use to impact modelers, stakeholders and decision-makers working in the context of protected natural areas. The main objective of the school are thus to provide the students with an insight into climate and impacts modeling techniques, as well as environmental monitoring and decision-makingstrategies for regionsthat are not always easily accessible and rich in data. There will be ample opportunity to sample interdisciplinary aproaches to complex environmental problems and to exchange ideas and questions between the lecturers and the students.

El Programa Sistema de Información Territorial de Santa Cruz, una iniciativa del Estado Provincial dependiente de la Subsecretaria de Planeamiento de la Provincia de Santa Cruz, iniciativa conjunta con la Estación Experimental Agropecuaria Santa Cruz (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria) invitan a las IV Jornadas Regionales de Información Geográfica y Ordenamiento Territorial.
Esta nueva edición de las Jornadas se realizará en la ciudad de Río Gallegos, provincia de Santa Cruz.
Las IV Jornadas Regionales de Información Geográfica y Ordenamiento Territorial están dirigidas a áreas de la Administración Pública que desarrollan, almacenan, procesan, analizan o difunden información espacial o bien toman decisiones sobre éste tipo de información; a las oficinas de tierras y catastro provinciales y municipales; a los Ministerios, Secretarías, Subsecretarías u otras instituciones equivalentes que operen con estas tecnologías; universidades y unidades dependientes de la Región; servicios de inteligencia y seguridad; también a empresas de los sectores público y privado; profesionales y particulares dedicados al procesamiento de información geoespacial; interesados en ampliar sus conocimientos entorno a la información espacial, la injerencia de ésta en la toma de decisiones sobre el territorio y el ordenamiento territorial, intercambiar experiencias o exponer sus avances, discusiones y resultados, desarrollos e inconvenientes en su tratamiento, o bien mediante aplicaciones de herramientas (mediante Sistemas de Información Geográfica, Procesadores Digitales de Imágenes, Sistemas de Posicionamiento Global y otras Tecnologías afines).”

El principal objetivo de la Conferencia ForestSat2010 es dar a conocer técnicas y metodologías aplicadas al uso de sensores remotos, que mejoren la gestión territorial en general y la forestal en particular. Todo ello, teniendo siempre en cuenta el uso múltiple del monte, desde su enfoque más productivista hasta su papel más social, sin perder de vista su importancia como fuente de biodiversidad y su función en el secuestro de CO2.
Los objetivos específicos del congreso son los siguientes:
* Presentar las principales herramientas de captura de información de datos geoespaciales de forma masiva disponibles para los técnicos forestales.
* Identificar el estado del arte de la teledetección a las aplicaciones forestales.
* Desarrollar y mejorar los métodos de transferencia de tecnología entre los científicos y los usuarios del mundo profesional.
* Garantizar que los gestores forestales, desarrolladores y la comunidad científica se comuniquen en el mismo lenguaje y que compartan objetivos.
* Mejorar la accesibilidad a la información derivada a través de nuevas técnicas cartográficas y al manejo de las Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales (IDEs).
